What is this blog about? - Did you know?

More than 165 million people in Europe live below the poverty line. In 18 countries of central and eastern Europe and the newly independent states, 8 have 50% or higher of their population living below the poverty line. Some 2% of the population of the European Region lives in absolute poverty.

The fall of Communism ended a political and economic system in which all people had been virtually guaranteed jobs and basic needs, such as food and housing. Economic upheaval has led to family breakup and a dramatic increase in the number of orphaned children and many orphans live in extreme poverty and suffer from malnutrition, disease, and starvation.

Unicef says nearly 18 million children in this region are living on less than $2.15 a day! (Acknowledgement to MMBrico.com for details).

Directhelp is not a charity. It is an attempt to raise money directly and quickly to shortcut the bureaucracy and waste.

Welcome!

It has been a steep learning curve to master both setting up this blog and working out the best way to help folks in the East who really need a little help. We really do not know here in the West how hard life can be there. I welcome your constructive comments both about what I am trying to achieve and ideas for getting the message out there. Please link to my blog and I will reciprocate. Above all please contribute if you agree with my direct approach. I will leave a link on this page where you can GIVE safely on a crowd funding site. What can be done?

The items needed are often the small things we take for granted, money for education for kids, money for shoes and clothing for women who have not had any decent items for years and a holiday. Even paying for a cheap computer would make their lives much richer, items charities often do not cover. My proposal is to raise money and take it to them or send it safely. Even this simple act is not easy without knowing the individuals. They are often so proud they will not ask for help, but just hint. Often they try to reciprocate with simple letters or kindnesses like cards or greetings. Heartbreaking!

I will be posting photos and more details of how this project proceeds and where contributions go. I want those who give and those who receive to be able to say how it has affected them. My aim is for us all to become personally involved with each other and to take responsibility for our fellow men and women. I am sure you agree it is something that needs doing and is not covered by large donors. This is a personal project and I will make mistakes. But hopefully it will make a positive contribution.Very often it is the small people who make the difference. Reasonable amounts will be used for distribution and running costs but I aim to keep these as low as possible. I will not be able to keep detailed accounts. This will not be possible given the resources. So please only contribute if you can afford it and agree with this direct approach by an individual who wants to help. This is a personal attempt to help. I do not aim to replace charity work or copy them.

I hope to show direct help by ordinary people like us works . We do not need to wait for large organizations. I will post details of where you can contribute shortly. Please give and help me reach these honest and brave people. They want to help themselves and just need a small helping hand every now and then. They have been badly let down by the world – lets show them there is good out there!
